Maya Texturing: 2.3 Creating Transparency

Create a Transparency

  1. Create a NURBs plane and sphere;
  2. Position items one on top of each other.
  3. Color the plane and apply a texture Blinnto the sphere
  4. Adjust the Transparency of your sphere
    • – Select the sphere and adjust the Transparency attribute in the Attribute Editor.
    • – Black is opaque and white is transparent.
  5. You can also add a map to the Transparency.
    • – Add a checkered map to the transparency attribute for the Blinn material.
    • – The checkered material gives you two values to adjust for transparency.
    • – View the results you will have to render your scene. You can however, turn on viewport 2.0 on your stage (STAGE || Renderer > Viewport 2.0) to see you changes on the stage but this depends if your video card supports viewport 2.0.
    • – Also have hardware texturing turned on.
  6. Use a Ramp Texture for your transparency.
    • – Select your sphere and RT + CLICK > Favorite Material > Ramp.
    • – This will delete your Blinn material and apply your ramp material.
    • – Add another color in the Transparency > selected color attribute.
    • – Notice the affect on the sphere.
    • You can also add acheckeredmap one of the selected colors in he transparency. Note: they are separate.
    • Another important element is the Color Input.
      • Color Input affects the output of your transparency.
      • -ex: Facing Input: Any color facing you is affected.
